The Russian linden tree is a natural monument northeast of Breitenlesau, a district of Waischenfeld in Franconian Switzerland . It stands at 463 meters above sea level on a meadow next to the road towards Plankenfels . The name of the linden tree is based on a legend according to which the Russian general Roppmann, who passed there with his troops at the beginning of the 19th century, suddenly died and was buried under the linden tree.

description

Trunk view

The trunk of the linden tree begins broad and massive on the ground, merges into a narrow waist area and branches several meters high with many branches into the crown. The crown has a completely harmonious structure. The trunk has no visible cavity. In 2014 it had a circumference of 8.29 meters at the point of its smallest diameter. With a trunk circumference of more than eight meters, the lime tree is one of the strongest solid wood linden trees in Germany. The height of the linden tree is about 23 meters and the crown diameter is 26 meters. The age of the linden tree is given in the literature as almost 200 years and justified with the year 1813 in a stone column next to the linden tree. However, this age appears dubious for the trunk dimensions. Another source gives the age of the linden tree at 400 years and justifies this with the fact that the year 1813 relates to the setting of the stone column ten years after the general's death and has nothing to do with the age of the linden tree.
