The steam locomotives of the Russian series Я [ ja ] were Russian passenger steam locomotives with a 1'C wheel arrangement, produced from 1896 to 1903 for a number of Russian railway companies. They were intended for the transport of suburban trains . They got their name from the first railway company to order, the railway line from Moscow to Yaroslavl .
history
Prehistory to the creation of the steam locomotive
At the end of the 19th century there was a sharp increase in suburban traffic and intercity traffic on many Russian railway companies . This led to an increase in the number and weight of the suburban trains. The biggest problems for these train connections were in the middle of the cities. For example, at the railway company from Moscow to Yaroslavl, the suburban trains were operated by steam locomotives with a 1'B wheel arrangement, which had reached their performance limits. The only available steam locomotives with a higher frictional weight were the Russian series Н with compound drive . This locomotive had a compound engine of the Vauclain type . Although this arrangement was economical in consumption, it was less suitable for the operation of suburban traffic with the numerous stops and approaches. In contrast to this design, the design with simple steam expansion had greater pulling force when starting up, since with this design the cylinders immediately received the steam from the boiler. For the suburban trains with their numerous stops and accelerations, the designers logically opted for a 1'C locomotive with a simple two-cylinder engine. In order to increase the pulling force, it was also decided to reduce the diameter of the coupling wheels from 1900 mm to 1800 mm.
Delivery of the steam locomotives
In 1896 a new steam locomotive was designed for the Nevsky plant on the order of the Kazan Railway Company . In the same year, delivery of the first 20 passenger steam locomotives with a 1'C wheel arrangement and a simple two-cylinder engine began. These delivered machines were given the original designation Series A by the company . In addition to the railway company from Moscow to Yaroslavl , other steam locomotives acquired the following railway companies: the private railway company from Libawo to Romenskaya in Belarus (the steam locomotives were named series ПН [ pɛ.ɛn ]), the railway in the Vilna governorate (here the steam locomotives received the Designation series Н [ ɛn ]), the Katharinenbahn (series Н), the Samaro-Goldberg railway ( series A Н [ a.ɛn ] and series A П [ a.pɛ ]), the Transcaucasian railway ( series B Н [ vɛ .ɛn ]) and the railway company from Moscow to Brest ( series И [ iʒɛ ]). In addition to the Nevsky Works , some locomotives were manufactured by the Putilov Works from 1900 onwards. A total of 150 steam locomotives were delivered. In 1912 all locomotives were given the designation Series Я to Yaroslavl. Operating data and withdrawals are missing.
