The Catherine train (also Jekatherinenbahn ; Russian Екатерининская железная дорога / Jekaterininskaja schelesnaja doroga ; Ukrainian Катерининська залізниця / Katerynynska salisnyzja ) was a state railway of the Russian Empire in today's Ukraine and southern Russia . The railway served primarily to develop the ore and coal deposits in the Donbass and Krywbass and contributed to the rapid development of industry in these areas.

history

The railway project was approved on April 22, 1875, but the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878 initially prevented its implementation. The rail network of the Katharinenbahn was built mainly in the years 1882 to 1904. In some cases, subsequent, previously private routes were also bought by the state. The total length of the route network in 1902 was 2,134 wersts , and the average cost of building one werst of the main route was about 36,000 rubles. The opening of the Katharinenbahn gave the most important impetus to stimulate the economy, since the mining areas were now networked with one another, within the Russian Empire and with other countries. By 1913, the route network was expanded to over 2,800 werst. After the October Revolution in 1918, which now stretches was nationalized by almost 3,000 versts comprehensive track and on January 4, 1936 in Stalin Bahn (Russian Сталинская железная дорога / Stalinskaja schelesnaja doroga ; Ukrainian залізниця Сталінська / Stalinska salisnyzja ) renamed.
