The Krywbas ( Ukrainian Кривбас ; full name: Krywyj-Rih- Eisenerz Basin , Ukrainian Криворізький залізорудний басейн , formerly Russian Krivoy Rog ) is an economic region in the center of the Ukraine, characterized by iron ore mining and steel industry . It is arguably the most important iron ore region in Eastern Europe .

The region named after the city of Kryvyi Rih is located about 80–100 km west of the Dnieper on the edge of the Dnepr highlands in the southeastern part of the Dnepropetrovsk Oblast , and to a small extent in the Kirowohrad Oblast along the Inhulez and Saksahan rivers . The basin, which is geologically part of the Ukrainian Shield , extends over 100 km in north-south direction and 1–2 km to 6 km in width. The area has a size of about 300 km².

history

In 1866, the Ukrainian-Russian geologist, ethnographer, archaeologist and businessman Oleksandr Pol (1832–1890) unexpectedly found exposed layers of iron ore on the right bank of the river near the village of Kryvyi Rih during archaeological research in the Saksahan floodplain .

In 1873 Pol founded the "Society of the Krivoy Roger Ore", which operated professional ore mining and thus led to the growth and prosperity of the city of Kryvyi Rih . In 1874 the ore deposits were largely explored and by 1883 100 workers were already mining 1.5 million poods (1 pud = 16.36 kilograms) of ore in the Saksahan mine .

Before the opening of the Katharinenbahn , the mined ore was almost not transported away, but stored, so that between 1881 and 1883 only 83,000 poods and in the year the railway line opened, 2.1 million poods of iron ore were transported from the Krywbas!

In 1890, the Kryvbas took the first place in iron ore mining in the Russian Empire and the Katharinenbahn took the first place in terms of traffic. In 1902, just 10 years after Oleksandr Pol's death, there were already 79 mines in Krywbas.

Large iron ore and other ore deposits are located in the region, which is important for heavy industry . To take advantage of them, several large mining companies were founded in the mid-20th century. In the densely populated region lies the agglomeration of Krywyj Rih , to which, in addition to the city of Krywyj Rih, the city of Schowti Vody , in which the uranium found in the region is processed, belongs.

Kryworischstal (current name: Arcelor- Mittal Kryviy Rih) is the largest and most modern steel manufacturer in the whole of Ukraine. The mining companies deliver their raw materials either to Krivoroschstal or to steelworks outside the region, especially to Dnepropetrovsk .

A modern mining and processing plant is being built in the neighboring town of Dolynska ( Kirowohrad Oblast), co-financed by Ukraine, Romania and Slovakia .
