Russian Drama Theater Bishkek

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Russian Drama Theater Bishkek (also: Tschingis-Aitmatow -dramentheater) is one of the most important theaters in Kyrgyzstan . It already enjoyed a good reputation during the time of the Soviet Union , but has suffered from the emigration of numerous Kyrgyz cultural workers since the collapse of the Soviet Union .

history

The theater was founded in 1935 in Bishkek, the capital of the then Kyrgyz Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic . The main aim of the theater was to strengthen the relationship between Russia and Kyrgyzstan, which, as part of the Soviet Union , should also be culturally Russified . On November 6, 1935, the theater started playing a play by the Russian author Alexander Yanovsky . In the following decades the theater developed a reputation as one of the best theaters in Central Asia . Increasingly, plays by the famous Kyrgyz writer Tschingis Aitmatow have become an important part of the Russian Drama Theater program. In 1988 the drama theater ensemble from Bishkek made a guest appearance in Moscow and showed a play by Aitmatov there.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union

The collapse of the Soviet Union and the independence of Kyrgyzstan in 1991 marked a turning point for the Russian Drama Theater. Numerous artists left Bishkek for Russia and financial difficulties threatened the existence of the theater. Today the tradition of the Russian drama theater is continued by a small ensemble, but there is still a lack of financial means for regular theater operations. Nevertheless, performances and other cultural events often take place in the drama theater. Over time, the goals of theater have also changed. In the meantime, the theater is primarily geared towards conveying Kyrgyz culture and is dedicated to the works of local writers and artists. The drama theater continues to cooperate with Russian cultural institutions, for example through guest appearances in Russian theaters. In November 2019, the drama theater ensemble performed in Chelyabinsk , Kurgan and Magnitogorsk . Russian artists also appear on the stage of the drama theater , for example the Volkov Theater from Yaroslavl made a guest appearance in Bishkek for a few days in September 2019 and showed several performances in the drama theater .

building

The building of the Russian Drama Theater is located in the center of Bishkek. Ala-Too-Platz is to the southwest of the building, and Panfilow Park is to the northwest . The building itself is built in the classic modern style with large window fronts. In the vicinity of the drama theater there are other important cultural institutions with the National Museum of Fine Arts and the Bishkek Opera and Ballet Theater.
