Rustam Effendi (born May 13, 1903 in Padang , West Sumatra Province , † May 24, 1979 in Jakarta ), formerly Roestam Effendi , was an Indonesian poet and playwright . During the colonial period he was also a member of the Dutch parliament at times .

life and work

Rustam Effendi completed a teaching degree in West Java . Based on the Hindu verse epic Ramayana , he wrote his first play Bebasari in the mid-1920s (Indonesia's first modern play at all), in which he criticized Dutch colonialism. The Dutch hindered the spread of what they considered communist. After a failed communist uprising and the tightening of censorship, he left the country and went to the Netherlands in 1928, where he lived until 1947. From 1933 to 1946 he was a member of the Communist Party of the Netherlands and at times a member of the Dutch parliament, where he campaigned for the interests of the Indonesians.

Rustam Effendi wrote in an experimental language, influenced by Old Malay , which he adapted to the speaking rhythm. His poems included romantic and natural poetry, they also addressed family traditions and criticized colonial politics. He overcame his fixation on the traditional quatrain ( Syair ), but borrowed numerous words from Sanskrit and Arabic . Despite or perhaps because of his linguistic and imaginative power, his influence on the younger Indonesian literature has remained minimal. In the 1940s it was mainly his political writings that were printed.
