Myrl "Rusty" McDonald (born October 21, 1921 in Lawton , Oklahoma , † June 5, 1979 in Lawton, Oklahoma) was an American country musician . In 1950 he sang the hit Faded Love for Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys .

Life

Rusty McDonald began his career in the early 1940s. At the time he was on the KRLD radio station in Dallas , Texas . McDonald spent most of his career performing in the rough honky tonks . His friend, guitarist Spud Goodall, remembered him as follows: “A good guitar player, and one of the best singers. But he was a beer joint player - that's what he wanted to play. I brought him on with us I was with Tex Ritter (c.1948). He called me and said, 'Hey, I need some work bad.' I said OK. Tex liked him, too. He'd come and stay about two weeks, and then he'd say, 'I'm going back to Oklahoma.' Rusty, Charlie Harris, Troy Passmore - they were beer joint players. They were more comfortable in the joints. ”This is one of the reasons McDonald never made a national career.

In the late 1940s, McDonald was discovered by Bob Wills and hired as a singer for his western swing orchestra , as Wills had previously separated from his longtime vocalist Tommy Duncan . In 1950, McDonalds toured with Wills for a short time and took part in a recording session that produced the big hit Faded Love , in which McDonalds can be heard as the singer. The song reached number 8 on the Hot Country Songs .

But as early as 1951, McDonalds had left the Texas Playboys and appeared in the bars and pubs of Texas. In the period between 1951 and 1955 he was often in the Los Angeles area . His first solo record was probably recorded for Intro Records in 1952, You Got The Right Number / Call Operator 210 . In 1955, McDonalds held a session for Chesterfield Records on the west coast. These tracks deviated from his usual honky tonk sound; accompanied by the Maxwell Davis Band, McDonalds ventured into the field of rock and roll .

After this single missed the charts again, he returned to country and performed in various locales. Another record for Coast Records followed. Some recordings were made of his performances at the Southern Club in Lawton, Oklahoma in the 1960s. In 1967 he recorded an album for Austin Custom Records in Austin, Texas .
