Ruth Asmus (born March 30, 1934 in Halle / Saale ; † April 25, 2000 in Leipzig ) was a German opera , oratorio and lied singer ( mezzo-soprano / alto ). She was a member of the Leipzig Opera ensemble for over thirty years .

Live and act

Ruth Asmus initially studied acting in Halle, but was already active as a choir singer in Erfurt and Weimar from 1952 and was trained as a soloist at the Weimar University of Music . She made her stage debut in 1957 at the Magdeburg Theater as Mercédès in Carmen .

In 1962 she went to the Leipzig Opera House as a contralto and mezzo-soprano, which became her artistic home and where she was awarded the title of chamber singer in 1973 . Her extensive repertoire included the Dorabella in Così fan tutte , the Carmen, the Bess in Porgy and Bess , the Cherubino in Figaro's Wedding , the Preziosilla in Verdi's Power of Fate , the Joan of Arc in Tchaikovsky's Maid of Orleans and many others Lots. She has made guest appearances at the Dresden State Opera and the Komische Oper Berlin as well as with the Leipzig and Berlin ensembles in Yugoslavia , Poland and Cuba . After she left the Leipzig ensemble in 1994, she gave guest roles there, for example in 1995 as Filipjewna in Eugene Onegin . In 1999 she was made an honorary member of the Leipzig Opera.
