Ruth Beatrice Henig, Baroness Henig CBE , DL (born Munzer , born November 10, 1943 ) is a British historian and Labor politician.

family

Her parents were Kurt and Elfrieda Munzer, Jewish refugees who came to the United Kingdom from Holland in 1940. In 1966 she married fellow student Stanley Henig , who was a member of the House of Commons. They have two children and were divorced in 1993. In 1994 she married Jack Johnstone.

Academic career

Henig studied at Regent College in Leicester and Bedford College , where she graduated with a BA in history in 1965 . She received her PhD from Lancaster University in 1978 with a Dr. phil. in history. Then she was there as a lecturer in Modern European History. She wrote several books and articles on 20th century international history.

From 1997 to 2000 she was Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and in April 2006 she was one of the first six people to be awarded honorary membership by Lancaster University.

Political career

Henig sat for Labor in the Lancashire Regional Assembly from 1981 to 2005 and was the chair from 1999 to 2000. From 1995 to 2005 she was Chair of the Lancashire Constabulary Police Authority and from 1997 to 2005 Chair of the Association of Police Authorities . She was also a member of the National Criminal Justice Board from 2003 to 2005.

In the 1992 general election, she ran for her husband's former seat in the Lancashire constituency, but failed to beat the seat-owner Elaine Kellett-Bowman . However, it reduced the conservative majority from 6500 to 2000 votes.

Henig was awarded the CBE in 2000 and was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Lancashire in 2002.

On June 8, 2004, she was named Baroness Henig , of Lancaster in the County of Lancashire, a Life Peer .

On December 20, 2006, Home Secretary John Reid named her chairman of the Security Industry Authority .

Interests

In her spare time, Baroness Henig enjoys playing bridge . She is also into football and is a fan of Leicester City .
