Ruth Roland (born August 26, 1892 in San Francisco , California , † September 22, 1937 in Hollywood , California) was an American film and stage actress and film producer .

Life

As the daughter of a theater manager and a theater actress, Ruth Roland came into contact with the medium of acting at an early age and was already on the theater stage at the age of three and a half. After her parents' early divorce, she grew up with her mother until she died in 1900 when Ruth Roland was only eight years old. An aunt then took over custody.

As a child, she appeared in vaudeville productions and was discovered by director Sidney Olcott and his Kalem Company during one of her performances in New York City . He recognized the potential of the then 16-year-old Ruth Roland and engaged her for his short film The Scarlet Letter, produced in 1908 . Roland was highly sought after by producers of the time, including Mack Sennett , so their weekly fee was increased from an initial $ 25 to $ 100.

Ruth Roland stood in front of the camera in 211 silent films until 1927, four of which she produced herself between 1919 and 1922 with the Ruth Roland Serials company she founded . In the mid-1920s, Roland went increasingly to the theater and played vaudeville. In 1930 she succeeded in getting a leading role in a sound film in the novel Reno , but the film was not well received by the critics. When she was also seen in the 1935 mystery film From Nine to Nine , she only got a supporting role. In addition to her film career, Roland had also gotten rich from speculation in the real estate sector.

She was married twice. In May 1917 she and Lionel T. Kent stepped in front of the altar; the divorce followed two years later, in 1919. Roland was married to the actor Ben Bard (1893–1974) from 1929 until her death . Both marriages remained childless. Retired and largely forgotten by the public Ruth Roland died in September 1937 at the age of only 45 years, to cancer .

A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is dedicated to her today .
