The Ruthenian Lion ( Ukrainian руський лев ), a gold lion on an azure background, is the coat of arms of the Ruthenian Kingdom , the Ruthenian Voivodeship and the Western Ukrainian People's Republic .

The earliest images appear on the seals of the Ruthenian rulers from the 14th century. Starting with the revolution in the Austrian Empire in 1848, it became one of the political symbols of the Ruthenians ( Ukrainians ) and the Ukrainian national liberation movement. In recent days it has been considered the coat of arms of western Ukrainian countries in Lviv , mainly Galicia . It showed the emblems of the Ukrainian military formations of the 20th century - the Ukrainian Sitsch Riflemen (1914–1918) and the Division of the SS Galicia (1943–1945). Since 2009 he has been one of the shield holders of the Great Coat of Arms of Ukraine . The colors of the coat of arms are the colors of the flag of Ukraine - yellow (gold) and blue.
