Hessa al Jaber , also Al Jaber or al-Jaber, ( Arabic حصة الجابر, DMG Ḥiṣṣa al-Ǧābir ; born 1959 in Doha , Emirate of Qatar ) is a Qatari engineer, ICT specialist and politician. From June 2013 to January 2016, she was the first female minister for information and communication technology in Qatar and only the third woman in the emirate to hold a leading position as minister. She is also the first woman to represent the state of Qatar on the supervisory board of an international corporation.

education

Hessa al Jaber studied engineering at the University of Kuwait from 1976 to 1981 and graduated with a bachelor's degree. From 1984 to 1986 she completed a master’s degree at George Washington University in Washington, DC , where she also received her doctorate and a Ph.D in computer science in 1990 . Then she returned to Doha.

Profession and work

Hessa al Jaber is a proven technology expert in the field of IT and telecommunications. From 1990 she worked for 10 years as a lecturer at the University of Qatar, where she was the only lecturer in her department. From 1997 to 2000 she headed the IT department before moving to the private sector at the telecommunications company Ooredoo Qatar.

Established in 2005, Hessa al Jaber was General Secretary of the Supreme Council for Information and Communication Technology (ictQATAR). During her tenure, she was responsible for the modernization of the ICT infrastructure and the planning for the establishment of the Qatar National Broadband Network (Q.NBN) as well as competition and the liberalization of the telecommunications market in Qatar. Hessa al Jaber pushed for the establishment of the Qatar Satellite Company (Es'hailSat) , which successfully launched Qatar's first satellite Es'hail 1 in August 2013 .

In June 2013, the computer scientist was appointed as the first minister for information and communication technology in the emirate of Qatar. She was only the third woman in the emirate to head a ministry. Hessa al Jaber left the cabinet in January 2016 when her ministry was merged with the Ministry of Transport as part of a consolidation process.

In June 2016, she was the first woman in the emirate to be appointed to the supervisory board of an international company, the German Volkswagen group . At the United Nations , she is also a member of a commission for digital development. She also holds control mandates on the Board of Governors of the American School of Doha and in the Financial Market Authority of Qatar.

Currently, Hessa al Jaber is Chair of Trio Investment, a technology investment company that promotes innovative technologies to help solve health problems in the MENA region . She is also the chair of the Qatar Satellite Company (Es'hailSat) and the IT service authority Malomatia.

The computer scientist is considered a pioneer for equality in the Emirate of Qatar. She had given the impetus to found a university in Qatar. “Many in the country see these as a sign of change. While women were largely excluded from public life until recently, they now play a key role in the education sector. "

Hessa al Jaber is the mother of two children.

Awards

In December 2008, Hessa al Jaber was honored as National Figure of the Year by the Qatari Ministry of the Interior for her achievements and public commitment . The Arabian Business magazine named her in 2012 as one of the 30 most powerful Arab women. A year later she was listed in the same magazine among the 500 most important people in the Arab world.

The Internet Society appointed Hessa al Jaber as one of the eight most important people worldwide to the Advisory Board of the Internet Hall of Fame for the period 2013/2014 .
