Ryu Mitsuse
Ryū Mitsuse ( Japanese 光 瀬 龍 , Mitsuse Ryū ; born March 18, 1928 in Minami-Senju , Kita-Toshima County (today: Arakawa ), Tokyo Prefecture ; † July 7, 1999 ) was a Japanese science fiction author.
Life
Ryū Mitsuse was born in 1928 in the city of Minami-Senju in Tokyo Prefecture. His birth name was Kimio Chiba ( 千葉 喜 美 雄 ), but after his marriage he took his wife's surname and was henceforth Kimio Iizuka ( 飯 塚 喜 美 雄 ).
From 1945 to 1948 he attended the Kawamura High School, from which he received his degree. He then attended Tōyō University , which he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1953.
After graduating from university, Mitsuse joined the Kagaku Sōsaku Club ( 科学 創作 ク ラ ブ , Kagaku Sōsaku Kurabu ), which sold the magazine Uchū-jin ( 宇宙 塵 ). During this time he published several short stories under his alias Ryu Mitsuse.
Works
His best-known work is the novel Hyakuoku no Hiru to Sen'oku no Yoru ( 百億 の 昼 と 千億 の 夜 ). The novel is a combination of science and mythology and deals with Plato and the Buddha Siddhartha , among others . It was named one of the best Japanese-language novels in a 2006 poll by Japanese SF magazine . In the late 1970s, Hyakuoku no Hiru to Sen'oku no Yoru was adapted from Moto Hagio ( 萩 尾 望 都 ) as a manga .
