Rydal Mount
Rydal Mount is a house at Rydal near Ambleside in the Lake District . The poet William Wordsworth lived there from 1813 until his death in 1850.
Wordsworth was born in Cockermouth , Cumberland in 1770 and had known the Lake District since childhood. Because of his studies at the University of Cambridge , he moved to Cambridge in 1787 . After graduation, he traveled through England and Europe for twelve years. He then lived for eight years in Dove Cottage near Grasmere (1799-1808). Due to his growing family and many visitors, he was forced to move. After a brief stint at Allan Bank in Grasmere, the Wordsworths moved to Rydal Mount in 1813.
Rydal Mount was acquired in 1969 by Mary Henderson (nee Wordsworth), a great-great-granddaughter of the poet. It remains in the possession of the Wordsworth family and has been open to the public since 1970.
