Sámal Petersen

Sámal Petersen (born July 3, 1904 in Klaksvík , Faroe Islands , † October 7, 1976 ) was a Faroese teacher and politician of the Sjálvstýrisflokkurin . He was a member of parliament and minister for local affairs, culture and education in the Faroese state government .

Profession and Politics

Sámal Petersen finished his teaching degree in 1928 and worked as a teacher in his hometown of Klaksvík until 1971.

From 1939 to 1951 and from 1959 to 1962 he was a member of the Klaksviker municipal council and was mayor of his hometown from 1939 to 1943, 1949 and from 1959 to 1961.

Sámal Petersen was elected for the first time in 1957 as a member of the Sjálvstýrisflokkurin in the Faroese Parliament (Løgting) and remained so until 1966, where he held the Løgtings chair from 1963 to 1966. From 1967 to 1972 he then sat as Minister for Local Affairs, Culture and Education in the Faroese state governments Peter Mohr Dam II (1967–1968), Kristian Djurhuus III (1968–1970) and Atli Dam I (1970–1972).

Sámal Petersen's parents are Petur Samuelsen from Tórshavn and Johanna K. (nee Joensen) from Klaksvík . He was married to Turið (nee Petersen) von Svínoy .
