Fidel Sánchez Hernández

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fidel Sánchez Hernández (born July 7, 1917 in El Divisadero , † February 28, 2003 in San Salvador ) was a general of the Fuerza Armada de El Salvador and from July 1, 1967 to June 30, 1972 President of El Salvador during a turbulent phase of the country, which was marked by armed conflicts and economic problems.

Before assuming the presidency, Sánchez Hernández served as army general in El Salvador. He also served briefly as a military attaché in Washington , after he had participated in the fall of José María Lemus in 1960, as well as in Paris . President Julio Adalberto Rivera Carballo appointed him Minister of the Interior in 1962. Sánchez Hernández held this office until 1967, after which he became President of Rivera. He continued Rivera's progressive programs and formed a cabinet that was largely not made up of military personnel.

In July 1969, Sánchez Hernández led the Salvadoran army in the so-called football war against Honduras , in which he occupied large parts of the country. However, under a ceasefire agreement that was brokered by the Organization of American States , he withdrew his troops against the resistance of many of his own military.

The war with Honduras led to great economic hardship in El Salvador. Many refugees, mostly Salvadorans, who lived in Honduras, came to the country; in addition, Honduras closed trade routes.

In 1972, Colonel Arturo Armando Molina Sánchez Hernández followed as President of El Salvador.

Sánchez Hernández died of a heart attack on the night of February 28, 2003 at the age of 85.
