José María Lemus López
José María Lemus López (born July 22, 1911 in Puerto de la Unión, † April 1, 1993 in New York ) was a lieutenant colonel of the FAES and from September 14, 1956 to October 26, 1960 President of El Salvador .
Life
The mother José María Lemus López was Dominga López. His sister was Marta Lemus López. José María Lemus López was married to Coralia Párraga and had four daughters: Elena, Maria Cristina, Ana Margarita and Carmen, and four sons Jose Maria, Julio, Orlando and Rodrigo.
José María Lemus was Interior Minister in the government cabinet of Óscar Osorio Hernández from 1949 to 1955. He was the only candidate in the 1956 presidential election and was elected. Lemus was a candidate for the Partido Revolucionario de Unificación Democrática . His term of office, provided for by the 1950 constitution, was six years. He pursued liberal politics and allowed the return of citizens from exile and the release of numerous political prisoners.

He invested in infrastructure. During his tenure, 60–88% of export earnings came from coffee . A servant's daily wage did not exceed $ 0.60 . A drop in coffee prices reduced the state's income from coffee exports, which is why the social policy of its predecessor was not continued.
The Partido Revolucionario de Abril y Mayo (PRAM) was founded in the late 1950s . Her name referred to the resistance against the dictatorship of Maximiliano Hernández Martínez in 1944. In elections in the spring of 1960 she won a majority in San Salvador and five other cities. The refusal of the Lemus government to allow an opposition party to win the general election gave the opposition encouragement. In August 1960, Lemus declared a state of emergency and allowed the FAES to penetrate the Universidad de El Salvador . which contributed to his fall. José María Lemus López was flown to relatives in Costa Rica after his fall on October 26, 1960.
He later went into exile in New York. On September 23, 1992, his two American Pit Bull Terriers , Neftali Villegas, were attacked, killed and injured two other people. Lemus died of Hodgkin's disease . Its remains were buried at a state funeral in La Unión.
