Sándor Benkó (born August 25, 1940 in Budapest ; † December 15, 2015 there ) was a Hungarian musician of Dixieland jazz ( clarinetist and band leader ).

Life

Sándor Benkó founded the Benkó Dixieland Band in 1957 , which quickly became popular in Hungary. With his band he took part in numerous festivals and competitions and performed with musicians such as Milt Jackson , Freddie Hubbard , Al Gray , Buddy Tate , Albert Nicholas , Chris Barber , Huub Janssen and Acker Bilk . Benkó toured the Eastern Bloc with his band as early as the 1960s . They were awarded first prizes at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1971, as well as at the festivals in San Sebastian and Sacramento in subsequent years. The British trade journal Musik Week named them "Stars of the Year" in 1976. The band, which received numerous gold records , was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by Hungaroton in 2001 . Benkó himself received the Hungarian Liszt Prize in 1984 and the European Inter-LYRA Prize in 1998.

Sándor Benkó died on December 15, 2015 at the age of 75 in Budapest.
