The Sämtisersee is like the Fälensee and Seealpsee a lake in the canton of Appenzell Inner Rhodes in Alpsteinmassiv at the foot of the High box in Switzerland . It lies at an altitude of about 1209 m above sea level. M.
geography
The lake has an underground drainage, its water emerges again in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley . The water level of the Sämtisersee is subject to strong fluctuations. During periods of low precipitation, the water level can drop sharply in both summer and winter. In extreme cases, the lake dries up completely (e.g. summer 1998). The most important tributary, the Sämtiserbach, cannot carry enough water at such times. In the spring of 1999 there was an extraordinary amount of snow in the catchment area of the Sämtisersee, so that heavy precipitation in combination with the snowmelt caused the water level to rise 7 m above the middle class and flooded the road to Alp Samtis and to Bollenwees .
Due to its location in a depression about 70 m deep, a cold air lake can form over the Sämtisersee in calm and cloudless weather conditions . In winter, when the lake is frozen and there is snow, the temperature can drop well below −30 ° C under favorable meteorological conditions.
The name is derived from the name of the neighboring Alp Sämtis , documented since the 15th century ( alp Zemptis , alp Zemtis , Alp Sämtis ). Ultimately, this seems to be identical to the mountain name Säntis .
