The Fählensee (also written Fälensee ) is located in the Appenzell Alps at an altitude of 1447 m above sea level. M. and, like the Sämtiser and Seealpsee, belongs to the Alpstein . Like the Sämtisersee, it has an underground drainage and its water also emerges again in the Rhine Valley . It is the third largest mountain lake in the Swiss canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden .
The dialect pronunciation is [fɛːləseː], and in 17th and 18th century sources the name appears as Fähler-See . The orthographic fluctuation is due to the fact that in the local Appenzell dialect both -en and -er are only spoken as -ə .
location
The lake is located in the rear part of the southeast of the two longitudinal valleys of the Alpstein massif, in a very narrow valley cut between the Berggasthof Bollenwees and the Zwinglipass , embedded between Hundsteingrat and Roslen-Saxer First.
It can best be reached from Appenzell by bus to Brülisau and then with a longer walk, or from Sax in the canton of St. Gallen via the Saxer Lücke .
