Säubrennerkirmes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Säubrennerkirmes is a folk festival that takes place every year in Wittlich in Rhineland-Palatinate .

The fair is based on the medieval Säubrenner legend and took place for the first time in 1950 on the initiative of the then Wittlich mayor Matthias Joseph Mehs . The fair is very popular and well-known within the region and beyond its borders. It traditionally takes place on the third weekend in August because the Wittlich city patron , St. Rochus , has name day on August 16 .

Fair program

The framework of the fair program has remained almost unchanged for years and actually only differs from year to year in the bands and music bands that perform every evening on two stages in the city center.

Traditionally, the opening of the fairground and the drama about the Säubrennersage in the city park take place on Friday evening . Then the siege drink is given out on the market square and the fair is opened by the mayor.

On Saturday afternoon, there is a pageant through the city center, which culminates in the market square with the reading of the fair protocol. Many clubs and groups from Wittlich and the surrounding area are involved in the parade, such as B. the Wittlich vintners, the fire brigade or the Gerolstein city soldiers. The 50-year-old from Wittlich are also allowed to join the parade. These are mainly native Wittlich who started school in Wittlich. Traveling from America or Australia is not uncommon. Only now is the Saubaten available for purchase on the marketplace.

Monday is traditionally the "day of the Wittlich" at the fair. Public life is largely paralyzed, the shops are open briefly or not at all. The cleaning service ends during the night.

This is followed by Tuesday as a "family day", on which the focus is on the fairground .

The Saubaten

Every year over 100 pigs are consumed at the fair . Two pigs are used for demonstration purposes and are roasted whole on a spit at the sowing stand on the market square. The roast that is actually sold, which is served with rolls and mustard, is boiling in large chests.
