The Säubrennersage is a traditional legend from Wittlich in Rhineland-Palatinate and tells the story of an unfortunate looting of the city, which is said to have taken place around 1397 .

content

The robber baron Friedrich von Ehrenberg (in other sources also: Ehrenburg ) had besieged Wittlich. For a long time the city withstood the siege. One evening, however, the gatekeeper at the Himmeroder city gate could not find the bolt to lock the gate and instead used a turnip. During the night a sow ate the turnip. The gate burst open and the enemy was able to enter. The city was looted and burned down. After this raid the Wittlich drove all the pigs together to a big fire as a punishment and ate the Saubaten, which is still considered a specialty of the Säubrenner fair today.
