Sérgio Vaz (born June 26, 1964 in Ladainha , Minas Gerais ) is a Brazilian poet and cultural mediator.

Life

Sérgio Vaz was born in the small town of Ladainha in the state of Minas Gerais in southeastern Brazil. When he was five years old, his family moved to São Paulo . He later settled in the southern suburb of Taboão da Serra . There he founded the “Collective Cooperifa” ( Cooperativa Cultural da Periferia ) in 2000 . He converted a bar into a cultural center and initiated the “Sarau” (Brazilian for soirées) there, which gave the population a platform far away from any local cultural offerings to present and listen to their own texts in front of over 400 people a week.

In 2007 he organized the “Semana de Arte Moderna da Periferia”, inspired by the Semana de Arte Moderna of 1922. In addition to other events such as the “Chuva de Livros” (rain of books) for example. B. the "poetry in the air" (papers with poems were let fly on balloons), or the "ajoelhaço" ( men kneel on the street on International Women's Day ). He also coordinated the project “Poetry against Violence”, which was carried out in the public schools in the suburbs of São Paulo, for two years.

Sérgio Vaz was named one of the 100 Most Influential Brazilians by Época magazine in 2009 . His first books were published by small, independent publishers, and since 2007 he has been publishing with Global, São Paulo. Sérgio Vaz was the guest of the Week of Marginal Literature in 2013 (in Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne).

In the poem Os Miseráveis (The Wretched ) he compares the hypothetical life story of a poor and a rich Brazilian. This shows his sober analysis of the causes of social inequality . The title pays homage to Les Misérables by Victor Hugo .
