The Südbahnhofbrücke is an existing bridge for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists in the area of the new Vienna Central Station, which was completed in 2015 . It should also be completed in 2015, but was not opened to traffic until August 1, 2018.

Like the Arsenalsteg , which was completed in summer 2020, and an underpass in the course of Alfred-Adler-Straße , the bridge forms a connection between the Viennese districts of Favoriten and Landstraße across the tracks of the Südbahn and Ostbahn lines connected in the station area .

description

The Südbahnhofbrücke crosses the tracks of the main station with two supporting structures, each 60 meters long and more than 17 meters wide, which rest on Y-shaped pillars.

The bridge was designed by Albert Wimmer and calculated by the civil engineers Axis and Baumann & Obholzer. The planning was carried out by Alfred Pauser's company .

The steel bridge structures were designed with flat arched girders that are inclined towards each other. This tendency is repeated in the railings and on the front sides of the abutments .

The Südbahnhofbrücke was built in the extension of Franz-Grill-Straße (3rd district). It crosses Arsenalstrasse and the railroad tracks including the loading facility for motorail trains, which opened in 2014 . The new street then ends in a right-hand bend in the new Sonnwendviertel between the main train station, Gudrunstraße and Sonnwendgasse . A spiral driveway was built on Arsenalstrasse for the footpath and bike path.

history

The name of the bridge is derived from the south station , which was demolished in 2009/2010 , and in its place the main station was built until 2015 . The connection between the southern and eastern lines , which is implemented as a through station in the main station, was created from 1956 onwards in the form of two head stations with a common terminal building. Due to Vienna's peripheral location in divided Europe, the Southern Railway was the more important railway line after 1945, and the common station on both lines was named Südbahnhof.

The erection of the first two of three bridge piers began in the spring of 2010. Around 600 cubic meters of concrete were used for each of the girders, which were calculated for a maximum impact speed of 120 kilometers per hour .

In September 2010 the first bridge structure was assembled on site. On October 5, 2010, the approximately 460-tonne structure was lifted into place and turned 45 degrees to the side using an auxiliary track.

In October 2016, construction work began on the eastern ramp towards Faradaygasse. This construction work was completed in July 2018.
