Distribution map of the South China Cigar Shark

The South China cigar shark ( Isistius labialis ) is one of three species from the genus of cigar sharks ( Isistius ). The species was discovered in 1985 by Meng, Q.-W., Zhu, Y.-D. & S. Li first described on the basis of a single specimen ( holotype ).

features

The only specimen of the South China cigar shark described so far was 44 centimeters long. Comparable body lengths are also given for the other two Isistius species ( Isistius brasiliensis and Isistius plutodus ) in the literature.

The dentition has the thorn-like upper jaw teeth typical of Isistius and wide, triangular lower jaw teeth. In contrast to Isistius brasiliensis, the number of maxillary teeth in Isistius labialis is greater (43 instead of 31–37).

distribution

The specimen described was caught in the South China Sea .

Way of life

The way of life of the South China Cigar Shark is still unknown today.

The holotype was caught at a depth of 520 meters on the upper continental slope . Due to the morphologically very similar teeth to the two other Isistius species, one can assume that the South China cigar shark probably also feeds on invertebrates and the meat that it bites out of large fish or marine mammals with the help of its teeth. Such typical wounds caused by Isistius were e.g. B. found on whales.

The fact that the species, like most cartilaginous fish, is ovoviviparous (that is, the embryos develop in the womb and are then born alive) can be concluded from studies on other cigar shark species.
