The genus of the cigar sharks ( Isistius ) belongs to the Dalatiidae family within the order of the dogfish-like (Squaliformes) and includes 3 species:
- Cigar shark ( Isistius brasiliensis )
- Big tooth cigar shark ( Isistius plutodus )
- South China Cigar Shark ( Isistius labialis )
A peculiarity of this genus, which lives in greater depths, is its ectoparasitic feeding habit . Using their specially adapted teeth, they cut cone-shaped, round pieces from their prey, which earned the cigar sharks the English name "cookie cutter shark". The characteristic scars of their attacks can be found again and again on larger fish and marine mammals.
