The Southern Morava ( Serbian Јужна Морава Južna Morava ) is the right source river of the Great Morava in eastern Serbia .
etymology
The name Southern Morava, as opposed to the Western Morava , the left source river of the Great Morava, was not used until the 20th century. The name Bulgarian Morawa ( Bulgarian Българска Морава ) is often found in the geographical literature of the 19th century , as the region was assigned to the settlement area of the Bulgarians at that time . The Western Morava, on the other hand, was called the Serbian Morava .
course
The longest source river of the Southern Morava, the Binačka Morava , has its source in the far north of North Macedonia , about 20 km north of Skopje . At Bujanovac it joins one of the rivers called Moravica and is now called Southern Morava . Their path leads them over 20 km through a wide and fertile plain. Behind Vranje, it narrows to a deep gorge between the Kukavica and Krajiste mountains , which opens again after about 30 km at Leskovac . The main traffic flows (trunk roads, railways) from Serbia to North Macedonia and Greece also run through this valley .
Behind Leskovac begins the Niš plain , which is a very fertile and densely populated part of Serbia. Here the Southern Morava flows into the Toplica from the left and the Nišava from the right . Then the Sokobanjska Moravica flows from the right . Shortly before the confluence with the Western Morava at Stalać , the river winds again for 18 km through a narrow valley, which then opens to the Morava plain.
