The Südliche Rhinstrasse Bridge is a road bridge in Berlin that leads the Rhinstrasse over the Ostbahn in the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district . It was built in 1975 as the northern extension of the street at the zoo.

history

The southern Rhinstrasse bridge was built in 1975 on the Friedrichsfelde Ost S-Bahn station , which was moved to Rhinstrasse in 1979 , and connects the districts of Marzahn-Hellersdorf and Lichtenberg with one another in a north-south direction . Road traffic on the bridge has two lanes for each directional lane and the tram runs parallel to road traffic as a single track for each directional lane. The construction had three superstructures. In the middle was a steel girder construction with supply lines . The two outer steel box girder bridges each led from the inside to the outside by a tram track attached to the superstructure without thresholds, a stop island with barriers, the carriageway with two directional lanes and the sidewalk with protective grating. The total width was 37.5 meters with a span of 45 meters.

In 2002 and 2006, an intensive structural inspection in accordance with DIN 1076 showed considerable damage, which impaired the load-bearing capacity and stability. For this reason, extensive plans were drawn up for a new bridge, which the Senate Department for Urban Development and the Environment, as the client, had to coordinate with Deutsche Bahn AG and the BVG . At least 18 million euros from the state budget are required for financing. In 2016 there was a public tender for the planned construction work.

Construction of the bridge could begin on March 12, 2018 after a temporary set of traffic lights had been set up. The construction work is expected to last until 2020. The new bridge will consist of four separate individual structures: two road bridges and two tram bridges. The new tram stops on the bridge will have steel and glass roofs, longer platforms, and will be connected directly to the S-Bahn station via two new stairways.

Construction process

From March 12, 2018 to March 26, 2018, there were significant traffic problems in tram traffic, because the BVG established a single track on the bridge and set up a replacement rail service . During this time there were restrictions in both car and rail traffic at the intersection of Rhinstrasse / Seddiner Strasse. The western part of the bridge structure has been closed to vehicle traffic since March 27, 2018, and the elevator system leading from here to the platforms has also been shut down. The road traffic has been diverted to the eastern part of the bridge, but there is only one lane available in each direction. Pedestrians and cyclists must also use the east side of the bridge. The demolition work on the western bridge took place in two phases (April 27 - April 30, 2018 and May 4 - May 7, 2018), for which the S-Bahn and long-distance rail traffic was completely closed. After completion, the traffic will be directed to the new western bridge, then the previous eastern part of the bridge can be demolished and rebuilt.
