South gas corridor

The southern gas corridor is a pipeline around 3,500 kilometers long with which natural gas is to be transported from the Shah Deniz 2 gas field in the Caspian Sea via Azerbaijan , Georgia , Turkey , Greece and Albania to Italy . The project is a joint initiative of the European Commission and Azerbaijan - with the aim of energy security and diversification of Europe's energy supply .

The southern gas corridor consists of three pipelines: the South Caucasus Pipeline, Transanatolian Pipeline (TANAP) and Transadriatic Pipeline (TAP). From 2020, ten billion cubic meters of natural gas per year are to be delivered to Europe via the southern gas corridor.

Installation

Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev declared the first section of the southern gas corridor open on May 29, 2018.

On May 29, 2018, Azerbaijan put the southern gas corridor into operation. The President of the Republic of Azerbaijan , İlham Əliyev , attended the official opening ceremony of the Southern Gas Corridor. İlham Əliyev said at the opening ceremony: "With this project we are drawing a new energy map of Europe."

The opening ceremony in Eskişehir was attended by the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan , the President of Azerbaijan İlham Əliyev, Georgia's President Giorgi Margelashvili and the Ukrainian Prime Minister Petro Poroshenko .

costs

US $ 45 billion is being invested in the southern gas corridor . Six billion US dollars for 26 wells in the Caspian Sea , fifteen billion US dollars for offshore installations and two billion US dollars for the expansion of the Sangachal natural gas and oil terminal near Baku. The expansion of the South Caucasus pipeline from Baku via Georgia to Erzurum cost five billion US dollars, and TANAP twelve billion US dollars from Erzurum to the western Turkish border. Eleven internationally operating companies and eleven gas wholesalers are involved in the project. The southern gas corridor creates over 30,000 jobs.

financing

November 2017 the southern gas corridor was listed as a project of common interest (PCI) of the European Commission. On March 15, 2018, the European Investment Bank (EIB) approved EUR 932 million for the southern gas corridor.

International reactions

European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini called the Southern Gas Corridor "an essential part of the EU's energy security strategy" and said the project was "undoubtedly one of our top priorities".

The federal government also welcomes the southern gas corridor. As stated in a communication from the Federal Government, the diversification of the energy supply could make a contribution to "guaranteeing a permanent, secure energy supply for the European Union at competitive prices".

On February 13, 2013, Italy, Albania and Greece signed a trilateral intergovernmental agreement, thereby confirming their political and economic support for the “Southern Gas Corridor” project.
