history

The seven meter high South Moravian Cross, made of concrete , was erected as the home cross of the South Moravians and Neubistritzers in December 1962. After the completion of the stairs and safety work against falls, the inauguration took place on July 7, 1963. At the same time, the first meeting of displaced South Moravians took place in Kleinschweinbarth.

The lighting of bonfires in the surrounding communities and the holding of a rally was banned on July 3 by the Federal Ministry of the Interior . This ban was justified by the fact that these program items could be perceived by Czechoslovakia as a provocation and could endanger international relations. In response to this ban, the Austrian Constitutional Court was approached, which ruled in favor of the organizers.

On the occasion of the 8th meeting on June 7, 1970, in the presence of Lower Austrian Governor Siegfried Ludwig, the South Moravian Cross was raised to a memorial to all fallen and deceased South Moravians in place of the heroes' monument near Klentnitz that was blown up in 1945 . It held this function until the consecration of the South Moravian war memorial on June 1, 1975 . The crown of thorns made of copper, which the cross received for decoration, was consecrated in 1974.
