The atonement cross is a listed stone cross in the town of Blankenburg (Harz) in Saxony-Anhalt .

It is located on the south side of the Schnappelberg street , north of the small castle .

History and design

The atonement cross was probably erected in the period after 1500. For a long time, and still in the 1980s, it stood further south between the properties in Hasselfelder Strasse 9 and 11 opposite the confluence of the Schnappelberg . Originally it is said to have been located further south, until it was moved due to the construction of the barracks there.

The reason for its construction is unknown. According to a legend, at the original location of the cross, a craft boy was killed for an amount of three pfennigs . An information board placed on the cross states otherwise that a journeyman killed his master and had to put the atonement cross for it. After that, the cross was originally in the cemetery of a medieval Chapel of Our Lady.

The edges of the Latin cross are parallel, with the shaft widening towards the bottom. The cross made of sandstone is 117 centimeters high with a width of 72 and a thickness of 31 centimeters. At the foot there is a width of 44 and a thickness of 35 centimeters. Various old damage can be seen on the cross, which can probably be traced back to traffic damage. There are also scratches and scratches.

In the local register of monuments , the atonement cross is listed as a minor monument under registration number 094 25398 .
