Architecture and history

In 1725, the Prince of Blankenburg Ludwig Rudolf von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel had a half-timbered building built for his wife Christine Luise , which was initially called the Orange House or Princely Garden House . The building was expanded and after the death of her husband Christine Luise lived there until her own death. From 1765 the dilapidated house was renovated over seven years and converted into a massive building made of sandstone blocks . The design was in the Rococo style . The two-and-a-half-story facade facing the street was kept simple and strict. There are three risalites , which are crowned with curved gables. The side projections are four-axis and therefore wider than the central projection. The house is covered with a hipped roof . In the 1790s, elongated, boarded annexes were added to the east and west, which originally housed a chapel, greenhouse and stables. Due to the natural slope of the terrain, the house has different storey heights, so that the building on the garden side is only one and a half story high.

From 1914 to 1918 the house served as one of the residences of the family of Ernst August von Braunschweig and Lüneburg . In 1917 his wife Viktoria Luise von Prussia gave birth to their daughter Friederike von Hannover , who later became Queen of Greece .

In the local register of monuments , the castle is listed as a historical building under registration number 094 00663 .
