After the fall of the Berlin Wall and before German reunification , this was the last edition of this tournament. For the first time since 1961 tennis players from West Germany were there again. The tournament started on a Tuesday for the first time. The Nations Cup was no longer held. Because of the low participation among women, there was also no women's doubles. The women played in two groups, each against each other and the two group winners then won the tournament. The winner Jelena Pogorelowa from the Soviet Union against their countrywoman Nadezhda Strelzowa . In the men's singles, Tomasz Lichoń won against Paweł Ostrowski in a purely Polish final , Matthias Kaster from Bielefeld reached the semi-finals here. In the men's doubles, Cuban Wilfredo Henry was able to successfully defend the title in the final against Lichoń and Ostrowski alongside his compatriot Dubiel Medina .
