In addition to most of the top players from the GDR, players from Poland, Hungary, the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia and France took part, the latter being members of the workers' sports federation Fédération Sportive et Gymnique du Travail . The final rounds were attended by around 2,000 spectators, including many vacationing miners and around 100 Soviet soldiers.
The Hungarians were the most successful. The former national champion András Ádám won the men's singles and was also successful in the men's doubles with his compatriot István Sikorszky . The women's singles won Márta Peterdy , who was also the Hungarian champion that year. The two Czechoslovaks Jana Dvořáčková and Olga Lendlová ( Ivan Lendl's mother ) were successful in women's doubles . In mixed doubles, the Polish subscription champion Jadwiga Jędrzejowska won alongside her compatriot Józef Piątek . In the women's singles, Inge Fiebig from Bitterfeld reached the semi-finals.
