Karl-Heinz Sturm

Karl-Heinz Sturm (born February 28, 1924 in Delitzsch ) is a former German tennis player and sports official . He was president of the German Tennis Association of the GDR .

Life

Sturm was an active tennis player from 1938. He did military service during World War II and was a prisoner of war from 1944 to 1946 .

After his return from captivity, he completed a sports teacher degree at the Martin Luther University (MLU) Halle (Saale) . In 1953 he became a research assistant, later head of the study department at MLU Halle. The university professor worked as a young trainer for the company sports community (BSG) Chemie Buna Schkopau and as chairman of the commission for the promotion of young talent of the German Tennis Association (DTV).

In the 1950s he was five times GDR champion in tennis singles (1951, 1952, 1954, 1955 and 1956).

Sturm was Vice President from 1966 to 1974, then President of the German Tennis Association of the GDR from 1974 to 1987. He was also a member of the federal executive committee of the German Gymnastics and Sports Federation and was a member of the SED . In October 1981 he was awarded the Badge of Honor for Physical Culture and Sport of the German Democratic Republic . After the fall of the Wall in the GDR , he became managing director of a multimedia company in Berlin in 1992 .
