The locomotive of the class ТЭ5 (German transcription TE 5) of the Soviet Railways (SŽD) was a broad-gauge diesel locomotive that appeared as a derivative of the well-known ТЭ1 .

history

In 1948 the Kharkov locomotive factory delivered two (other sources report five) experimental diesel locomotives, which were intended on the basis of the ТЭ1 for operation in climatically exposed areas (primarily the northern regions of the former Soviet Union ).

The diesel engine, the battery and the turbocharger were arranged in a compartment in the shape of a wagon. The cooler at the rear and the warming device for the diesel engine at the front were housed in the usual front-end design. This was designed as a steam boiler. Certainly a little unsuitable compared to the basic version was that the locomotive restricted the view of the engine driver when reversing. In the rest of the construction, the ТЭ5 had no differences from the ТЭ1 .

The locomotive was tested in the Moscow passenger train depot of the Moscow-Kursk directorate . Then it was into the depot nyandoma the Severnaya doroga schelesnaja issued for operational use. The series did not go into series production because at the same time the SŽD series ТЭ2 appeared, which was on the one hand more modern and on the other hand more powerful. The ТЭ5-032 has been preserved as a stand object in the St. Petersburg Railway Museum, Warsaw Railway Station .
