Səttar Əsədov

Səttar Məcid oğlu Əsədov ( Russian Саттар Меджид оглы Асадов Sattar ogly Mejid Assadow or Саттар Меджидович Асадов Sattar Medschidowitsch Assadow * 15. March 1910 in Shusha , Russian Empire ; † 11. February 1974 in Baku , AsSSR , USSR ) was an Azerbaijani zoologist with the specialty of helminthology ( parasitic worms ).

Life and accomplishments

Səttar Əsədov began studying biology at the Biology Faculty of the Azerbaijan State University in 1934 and graduated there in 1939. After he remained at the faculty as a lecturer for a year, he began his apprenticeship in 1940 at the Institute of Zoology of the Academy of Sciences of the AsSSR . In 1945 he defended his dissertation on the biology of the lancet leech ( Dicrocoelium lanceolatum , now a synonym for the small liver fluke ( Dicrocoelium dendriticum )) as a cause of dicrocoeliosis in ruminants .

In 1945 Əsədov was appointed head of the Helminthology Laboratory of the Academy of Sciences of the AsSSR, a position he held until his death. Əsədov took over the deputy head of the Zoological Institute Academy of Sciences of the AsSSR in 1947 and was appointed director of the institute in 1950, which position he held until 1960.

Səttar Əsədov had been in contact with the Russian helminthologist Konstantin Ivanovich Skrjabin since his student days and, on his advice, was a doctoral student at the helminthological laboratory of the USSR Academy of Sciences between 1954 and 1957 . In 1961 he obtained his doctorate in biological sciences on the ecological and geographical analysis of the helminth fauna of the USSR. His later work also dealt primarily with the ecology and geography of the parasites of Azerbaijan and the measures to combat the diseases caused by these diseases in farm animals.

In 1962 Əsədov was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the AsSSR, and in 1968 he was appointed as a real academician.
