S-Oil is a South Korean company based in Seoul . The company operates in the oil industry. S-Oil operates refineries and produces various petrochemical products.

history

In 1976 the company was founded under the name Korea-Iran Petroleum Co., Ltd. as a joint venture between Ssangyong Cement Industrial and the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC). In 1980, the preparatory work was completed and the first atmospheric distillation plant was completed, which created the basis for the manufacture of petrochemical products. In the same year the company was renamed Ssangyong Oil Refining Co., Ltd. renamed after Iran pulled out its investments. In the following years the production of lubricating oil and petrol began . In May 1987 the company went public . In 1991 it entered into a joint venture and long-term crude oil purchase agreement with the Aramco Overseas Company. A research and development center was also set up. In 1996 the first heavy oil cracking plant went into service. In 1999, Ssangyong Cement Industrial, the second largest shareholder at the time, sold its shares and the company was spun off from the Ssangyong Group. In the following year it was renamed S-OIL Corporation.
