The Aare Bridge Koblenz is a single-track railway bridge on the Stein-Säckingen – Koblenz railway line , which spans the Aare in Switzerland near Koblenz AG . The building dates from 1892.

location

The bridge crosses the Aare 400 meters below the Klingnau power plant and 800 meters above where the river flows into the Rhine . It stands in the municipality of Koblenz and Leuggern . The Aare valley is less than a kilometer wide between Koblenz and the hamlet of Felsenau, and the Stein-Säckingen railway line runs through the valley in a tight arc to reach Koblenz train station from the south. The location of the station was determined when the Turgi – Koblenz – Waldshut railway line was built in 1859, because this is where the slope to the higher Rhine bridge Waldshut – Koblenz begins.

The Aare Bridge forms the middle section of the curve between Felsenau and Koblenz train station. On the left bank of the hamlet of Gischberg, a short railway embankment leads to the bridge, and on the right bank, an approximately 400-meter-long dam through the floodplain forest connects the bridge with Koblenz train station.

history

The 26 km long Stein – Koblenz railway was built by the Swiss Northeast Railway as part of the left bank Rhine Valley Railway from Basel to Romanshorn . The largest engineering structure in the section was the 236 m long bridge over the Aare between the Koblenz and Felsenau stations. Together with the railway line, the structure was put into operation on August 1, 1892. A special feature at that time was the continuous gravel bed . The bridge superstructure was reinforced in 1984, among other things. Since 1994 only freight trains have been using the bridge as planned.

From 2019 to 2021, the SBB will have the bridge piers reinforced to improve flood protection and the pedestrian walkway will be renewed.

In 1991, the Swiss Post dedicated an 80 cents stamp to the bridge.

construction

Superstructure with gravel bed

In the area of the bridge, which crosses a track and a sidewalk, the route has a 350 m radius in the ground plan. The welded iron bridge superstructure consists in the longitudinal direction of a chain of five single-span girders with pillar spacing of 47.1 m to 47.8 m. The constructions have a trough cross-section with the roadway below. The two main girders at the side, with a center distance of 5.3 m, have been designed as modified Schwedler girders . They have an upper chord that is curved vertically at the ends and a straight lower chord, in the middle the fields are crossed out twice to avoid pressure-resistant diagonals. The superstructures were supplied by Bosshard & Cie. from Näfels .

The foundation of the pillars was carried out with steel caissons in depths of up to 12 m, which were filled with concrete. The pillars made of natural stone masonry were erected on top.
