The SC Sonnborn 07 (officially: Sportclub Sonnborn 07 eV ) is a sports club from the Sonnborn district of Wuppertal . The first soccer team played for seven years in the highest amateur league in the Lower Rhine region.

history

The association was founded in 1907 through the merger of the associations Glaus and Weidner . In 1920 the Sonnborn rose to the then first-class district league Bergischer Kreis . The qualification for the single-track district class Berg / Mark was missed after a 0-1 defeat in the playoff against SSV Wuppertal . In 1926, the team rose to the top division now called the 1st district class. Three years later they missed the qualification for the newly created district league Berg / Mark , but managed to get promoted there in the following season 1929/30. In 1933 the qualification for the newly created Gauliga Niederrhein was missed.

After the end of the war, the people of Sonnborn played in the district class and in 1952 they made it to the state league , which at the time was the highest amateur league on the Lower Rhine. The team reached third place right in the promotion season. In the following season, the Sonnborn were even runner-up behind VfL Benrath . In 1956, however, the team missed the qualification for the newly created association league Niederrhein . Two years later, he was promoted to the association league. After three years, it went back to the national league in 1961. The low point of the relegation season was a 3:12 defeat at SpVgg Hochheide . In the following season, the Sonnborn were passed through to the district class after the team failed in the relegation relegation at Marathon Remscheid .

In 1964 they were promoted back to the state league and two years later the Sonnborn team played promisingly for promotion. The decisive game for the championship against Marathon Remscheid was lost in front of 7,000 spectators, so that the SC was only runner-up in the end. As early as 1968 it went down to the district class, where the team only narrowly failed to rise again several times. Then in 1978 it even went down to the district league, before being promoted again two years later. In 1991 it went back to the district league before being promoted again three years later. In the 2016/17 season, the Sonnborn started in the district league, but had to be relegated at the end of the season.
