The bulk carrier type SDARI Dolphin 57 was built in the People's Republic of China in a series of well over 400 units and is considered a standard ship in its market segment .

details

The Dolphin 57 series was designed by the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI) and has been built in numerous Chinese shipyards for various shipping companies since 2005. The ships are designed as Handymax or Supramax bulk carriers with superstructures arranged aft . They have five holds , each with their own hatch, the hatch covers of which are hydraulically operated. The total cargo space volume for bulk goods is 71,634 m³. Four hydraulic ship cranes mounted amidships are available for cargo handling . With a draft of 11.30 m, this type of ship can transport around 48,000 tons and with a maximum unloading of 12.80 m 57,000 tons. The units are designed for the transport of various bulk goods , such as grain, coal, minerals, including various dangerous goods. The tank roof of the cargo hold is reinforced for the transport of ore. In addition, bagged goods, steel profiles, tubes and other bulk cargo can be transported, but no deck loads.

The ships are powered by a two - stroke diesel engine . The engine enables a speed of around 14  knots . Several auxiliary diesels and an emergency diesel generator are available.

The SDARI Dolphin 57 was later developed into the ten meter longer type SDARI Dolphin 64 , which carries up to 64,000 tons.

Cheshire disaster in August 2017

On August 13, 2017, on August 13, 2017, south of Las Palmas, there was heavy smoke development in the cargo hold area of the Cheshire ( IMO No. 9593646) built at Jiangsu Jinglin Shipyard for the British Bibby Line . The ship, which was loaded with 40,000 tons of ammonium nitrate and was en route from Norway to Thailand, then wanted to call at a port in the Canary Islands as an emergency port . However, this was refused by the authorities for security reasons. The ship was evacuated on August 15, 2017.

After the ship drifted at sea for over a week, a towing connection to the damaged vessel was established on August 21. The hold area was cooled with seawater by auxiliary vessels. On August 27, 2017, there was no longer any smoke development from the holds. The ship was finally recovered and towed to Motril . Here the ship was unloaded. Initially it was planned to repair the ship afterwards. However, it was then sold for demolition and stranded in Aliağa on May 2, 2018 .
