Bibby Line
The Bibby Line is a British shipping company with headquarters in Liverpool that a passenger airline service to Burma / Myanmar for operation.
history
The origins of the shipping company go back to the time of the sailing ships . In 1801 John Bibby became a co-owner of the sailing ship Dove , and in 1805 the first own sailor was bought. Initially, the shipping company operated liner services to the Mediterranean ; these services were later expanded to South America , India, and East Asia .
In 1850 the company bought its first steamship , which was used in the Mediterranean liner service. In 1859 the Bibby Line was the first shipping company to commission newbuildings from E. J. Harland's shipyard. This shipyard later became the world-famous Harland & Wolff Ltd. In 1873 all shipping company activities were transferred to long-term partner Frederick Leyland, who joined forces with his shipping company F. Leyland & Co. Ltd. made self-employed. The Bibby family temporarily withdrew from shipping.
In 1889 the Bibby family returned to found Bibby Bros. & Co. Ltd. returned to the shipping business and operated a liner service to the Far East. The typical route ran from Liverpool via Gibraltar , Malta , Suez Canal , Aden , ( Bombay ), Colombo , ( Madras ) and ( Calcutta ) to Rangoon . The ships could be recognized by a yellow ocher chimney with a black cap and were named after an English county, with the typical ending in -shire .
In 1891 the shipping company was renamed Bibby Steamship Company Ltd. renamed. The company began to become increasingly involved in the transport of British troops to the colonies , which proved to be a good and stable source of income for the shipping company. In 1931 it was renamed again, this time to Bibby Line Ltd.
With the independence from Burma in 1962 the economic problems began. The transport of troops ceased and the demand for passenger and freight shipping from Great Britain to Burma also declined noticeably. In 1965 the passenger liner services were discontinued and the shipping company switched to the charter business, in which it is still active today.
