The SGB-SMIT GmbH is a manufacturer of power transformers . The company, headquartered in Regensburg , has nine factories and further branches in ten countries: Germany, France, the Netherlands, Romania, the Czech Republic, China, India, Malaysia, South Africa and the USA.
Company history
The SGB-SMIT Group came into being in 2000 when the SMIT transformer factory in Nijmegen , which was founded in 1913 by Willem Smit, joined the SGB Group. At this point in time, the SGB Group, which emerged from Starkstrom-Gerätebau GmbH in Regensburg in 1947, was a subsidiary of the RWE Group. In 2004 the SGB-SMIT Group was sold by RWE to the financial investor HCP Capital Group. In 2008 it was taken over by BC Partners . In 2017 the financial investor One Equity Partners (OEP) took over the SGB-SMIT Group.
In 2010, the group used existing connections from Royal SMIT to the North American market, expanded them further and founded SGB-USA. In 2012, with the integration of OTC Service Ltd, a specialist in the repair and modernization of small and medium-sized transformers followed.
In 2014 a majority stake in the transformer manufacturer Retrasib SA in Sibiu (Romania) was acquired. The aim was to increase the competitiveness of SGB-SMIT in the area of 200 MVA transformers. This transformer size fits in ideally between the product range of the group members SGB Regensburg and Royal SMIT.
In 2017 the SGB-SMIT Group grew by three new members on two continents. What is special about this is that it was each a separate start-up. Specifically, these are SGB Czech Trafo in Olomouc, Czech Republic ( cast resin transformers for standard applications up to 2,500 kVA); SGB Transformers India in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India (cast resin transformers); SGB China in Yancheng (also cast resin transformers).
In 2018, the start-ups were followed by another year of acquisitions : In South Africa, after the purchase of a local transformer specialist, the group member SGB-SMIT POWER MATLA was established, which produces medium-power and large transformers in Pretoria and distribution transformers in Cape Town. In Fontenay-le-Comte, France, the company BCV Technologies, which specializes in small and medium-power transformers and special devices, was acquired.
Products
The product range includes large transformers , medium-power transformers, small power transformers, oil distribution transformers and cast resin transformers , variable compensation reactors and phase shifter and traditionally as Lahmeyer-Compact station designated substations .
SGB-SMIT Group also manufactures electronically controlled transformers, which, as part of intelligent power distribution networks ( smart grids ), react to fluctuating and decentralized power supply .
The SGB-SMIT Group sells its products through sales offices and agents in 42 countries. The company has customers in more than 50 countries.
