SGI UV

The SGI UV ("Ultra Violet") or SGI Altix UV product family is a series of Intel Xeon- based servers from Silicon Graphics , the main memory of which is connected to cache-coherent NUMAlink technology (see also NUMA ). These clusters are particularly suitable for applications such as in-memory databases that require a very large main memory. These servers run under unmodified Linux enterprise distributions such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux or SUSE Linux Enterprise Server .

The UV 1000/2000/3000 systems are blade systems that are similar to the SGI ICE in terms of their mechanical structure , but in contrast to this they offer cache coherence through NUMAlink, but not so many CPUs can be connected. The series 1000, 2000, 3000 are updates of the same series, newer Intel Xeon CPUs and NUMAlink versions were used.

In contrast, the UV 300 / UV 30 systems are clusters of individual 4-CPU servers with their own housings.

Altix UV 1000/100

The UV 100/1000 replaced the Itanium-based SGI Altix computers. There were two models with:

  • UV 100: 48 sockets per rack (3 racks with 96 sockets and 768 cores, 6 TB main memory) 24 blades per rack
  • UV 1000: 64 sockets per rack (4 racks with 256 sockets and 2048 cores, 16 TB main memory) 32 blades, racks with 2 * 8 blades,

The blades each contain 2 Nehalem EX CPUs with up to 8 cores, 8 DIMMs per CPU and NUMAlink Version 5 wiring.

UV 2000

The UV 2000 racks each hold 4 blade housings for 8 blades in a 2 * 4 arrangement. Air and water cooling are offered. The blades contain Intel Xeon (Ivy Bridge) E5v2 CPUs and NUMAlink version 6 wiring.

  • with 2 Xeon CPUs and 8 DIMM slots for main memory per CPU

UV 3000

UV 3000 is an update of the UV2000 blades to Intel Xeon (Haswell) E5v3 and NUMAlink version 7

There are 2 different blades:

  • with 1 Xeon CPU and a PCI-Express slot for computing accelerator cards such as Nvidia Tesla or Intel Xeon Phi x100 series
  • with 2 Xeon CPUs and 8 DIMM slots for main memory per CPU

UV 300

The basic components of the UV 3xx series are 4-socket Intel Xeon servers that are clustered using NUMAlink technology. There are 2 ASICs on a four-socket motherboard, which SGI calls HARP .

The HARP component has the function of a " switch ": it is directly connected to 2 Xeon CPUs each with a QPI connection (UV systems only use Xeon variants with 3 QPI links), to the outside world HARP 14 NUMAlink ports ready, the 2 HARP components of a motherboard with 2 NUMAlink ports are connected to one another. The external ports are NUMAlink with cables usually to a fully meshed - network topology connected. Such topologies offer particularly low latencies and can therefore implement cache coherence in the main memory. Eight such 5- height 4-CPU servers each fit into a 19 " rack . Both air and (optional) water cooling are available. The individual server is designated as UV-30 , the cluster as UV-300 . Es there are certified variants for the Oracle in-memory database ( UV300RL ) and the SAP HANA in-memory database ( UV300H ). The servers use Intel Xeon (Broadwell) -E7 variants and NUMAlink version 7 , the cluster can accommodate up to 32 CPUs and 32 TB of main memory included After the sale of SGI to HPE, the systems are now called HPE Integrity MC990 X Server.

HPE has further developed the UV 300 / Integrity MC990 X series under the name Superdome Flex ; Intel Xeon SP processors are now used.
