The Intel Xeon series based on the Intel Nehalem microarchitecture is a family of 64-bit microprocessors for servers and workstations from Intel . These multi-core processors (depending on the model with four or six cores) represent the successors of the core- based Xeon processors.

The names used by Intel for the platforms with Nehalem-Xeons are Nehalem-EP (for Xeon-DP processors) and Nehalem-EX (for Xeon-MP processors).

technology

In general, the Nehalem-based Xeon processors can be technically divided into three categories:

  • The Xeon-UP processors, which are intended for use in single processor systems, use the same core as the desktop processor Core i7 and are therefore identical to it. They use socket 1366 and communicate with the chipset via a QPI link .
  • The Xeon DP processors are intended for two-processor systems, which is why, in contrast to the UP models, they have a second QPI link: While the first still goes to the chipset, the two processors can communicate directly with each other via the second link.
  • The (not yet released) Xeon MP processors are suitable for systems with four or more processors, as they even have four QPI links: one for connection to the chipset, the remaining three for communication with neighboring processors.

As a general innovation compared to their predecessors, all Nehalem Xeons offer an integrated memory controller . With Xeon UP and DP models this is equipped with three DDR3 memory channels , with Xeon MP models even with four FB-DIMM2 channels. Because of these far-reaching changes, Nehalem-Xeons use different sockets than their core-based predecessors: Both socket 1366 and socket 1567 have far more Lands than the typical Core-Xeon 771 socket . While socket 1366 still offers enough lands for three memory channels and two QPI links and is therefore used in UP and DP Xeons, socket 1567 is used in the Xeon MP models with four memory channels and four links.

In general, both the integrated memory controller and the point-to-point connections using QPI contribute to improved scalability of the Nehalem Xeons compared to the Core Xeons.
