Old Intel Pentium dual core emblem

As Pentium (dual-core) , Intel describes a family of dual-core processors (dual-core) for desktop PCs, which are placed as inexpensive processors and have relatively little last-level cache (L2 or L3 cache, depending on the architecture) have. With the Westmere-based Pentium versions introduced in 2010, Intel does without the addition of dual-core in the name .

Technical

The desktop versions for Socket 775 are based on the Intel Core microarchitecture , are offshoots of the Intel Core 2 Duo processors and support Intel 64 . The processors based on the Allendale core are identical to the Core 2 Duo processors of the E4000 series, except for the smaller cache, the Wolfdale-based variants with the Core 2 Duo E7000 series.

The SSE4.1 commands introduced in the Penryn are deactivated in the Pentium. Intel's virtualization technology VT is no longer deactivated from the Pentium E6300.

From January 2010 there will be Pentium G versions for the 1156 socket , based on the Nehalem (Westmere) architecture. They have the same processor cores as the Core i3 processors and also have a graphics chip as an extra die in their housing. However, they do not have Hyper-Threading , are cut in the cache and clocked more slowly.

From May 22, 2011, there will be Pentium G versions for socket 1155 , based on the Sandy Bridge architecture. They have the same processor cores as the Core i3 processors on the same architecture and also have an integrated graphics processor integrated into the chip. However, they have no SMT / Hyper-Threading , are clocked more slowly and the new instruction set extension AVX , which was introduced with "Sandy Bridge" for Core-i processors, is missing . The graphics unit has also lost all of its additional features in the Pentium. This lacks Intel's Quick Sync technology, which can be used for fast encoding of videos with certain codecs. The decoding functions have also been restricted so that the Clear Video HD technology and InTru-3D technology cannot be used.

With the 3rd Pentium series (Pentium G3xxx), which is based on Haswell , the Quick Sync technology was added again and videos can be encoded with the iGPU of the processor. This could also be the case with streaming programs such as B. Open Broadcaster Software (OBS for short), because the processor is significantly relieved during the stream, so streaming could also be done with the weaker Pentium dual-core processors.

With the first 4th Pentium series (Pentium G44xx to G4520), which are based on Skylake , support for XD-Bit and AES-NI was added. The integrated graphics unit now also supports resolutions up to 4K at 60 Hertz, and InTru-3D and Clear Video HD .

Others

Pentium Dual Core for Socket 775, like many other inexpensive processors, was often overclocked because the processor is delivered with a relatively low standard clock rate compared to other CPUs of the same construction. In addition, many Pentium processors had a relatively low FSB with a sufficiently high multiplier, so that you can easily increase the clock rate using FSB overclocking without reaching the FSB overclocking limit. Pentiums for the 1155 socket, on the other hand, can no longer be overclocked, just like their larger colleagues from the Core i3 series. In June 2014 a Pentium was released as an "Anniversary" Edition, as the Pentium is celebrating its 20th anniversary, with a freely selectable multiplier.
