Name of the processor core: Cascade Lake

The Intel Xeon series based on the Intel Cascade Lake microarchitecture is a family of 64-bit microprocessors for servers and workstations from Intel . These multi-core processors with 4 to 28 (SP) cores represent the successors of the Intel Skylake microarchitecture- based Intel Xeon Skylake processors.

Xeon Scalable Processor Generation 2

Block diagram of a Purley 2 socket system

The Cascade Lake generation of Scalable processors was developed for the Intel Purley server platform, i. H. it is socket-compatible with the Skylake-based scalable processors, so it has socket P or socket 3647, 6 DDR4 main memory channels and 2 or 3 UPI links. With the DDR4 modules, modules with a size of up to 256 GB are supported, the maximum main memory expansion is thus up to 3 TB per processor for the L and M variants. Each processor supports up to 48 PCI 3.0 lanes, unchanged from the Skylake generation.

In terms of production, there are the three dies already known from the Skylake generation:

  • Extreme Core Count (XCC): Cores in a 5 × 6 arrangement, up to 28 cores, three UPI connections
  • High Core Count (HCC): Cores in a 4 × 5 arrangement, up to 18 cores, two UPI connections
  • Low Core Count (LCC): Cores in a 3 × 4 arrangement, up to 10 cores, two UPI connections

The other variants are obtained through testing and selection, defective cores may be switched off in order to increase the yield. The naming scheme with the designations bronze, silver, gold and platinum is carried over from the first SP generation.

Xeon Scalable Processor - Advanced Performance

Connection of the individual "dies" with UPI links

In addition to the Socket-P processors, an Advanced Performance version (model number 92xx) of the scalable processors is also available. These processors consist of a multi-chip module with two XCC "dies" that are internally connected with a UPI link. All 2 × 6 DDR4 main memory channels are brought out with a ball grid array solder socket with 5903 contacts. These processors do not fit into the Purley server platform, at the start date Intel documents its own motherboards with the designation S9200WK with two processors per motherboard. In terms of circuitry, these 4-socket SP machines are the same, each "die" is connected to each other via a UPI link, and there are 24 DIMM slots for main memory. The coolers must dissipate up to 400 watts of power loss per base using air or liquid cooling.

The development of these variants is likely to be due to the competition from the AMD Epyc Rome generation with up to 64 cores, so that Intel can continue to show the "processor" with the highest throughput.

Xeon W-3200

The Xeon W processors of the 3200 series are the successors of a single model from the Skylake generation, the "Xeon W-3175X" processor with the LGA-3647 server socket. Technically, they are largely the same as the Cascade Lake Generation scalable processors. Xeon W-3200 is intended for high-end workstations with an external graphics card. The number of LGA-3647 sockets per computer is limited to 1, so there are no UPI links and no Intel Omni-Path connections. While the direct predecessor Xeon W-21xx from the Xeon Skylake generation still used its own socket (LGA-2066), the server socket of the scalable processors (server processors) with 6 main memory channels is used here. All Xeon W-3200 processors have two AVX-512-FMA units and support 1 TB, three "M" (memory) variants even support 2 TB of main memory. The only difference between these processors and the scalable processors is that Optane memory modules are not supported, a slightly higher turbo clock rate called Turbo Boost Max 3.0 and the PCIe 3.0 lines, the lines reserved for Intel Omni-Path connections are also available here, i.e. a maximum of 64 lines, and thus more than with the Scalable Processor variants.

The chipset is the C620 series (Lewisburg) and thus also the same as for the scalable processors.

Xeon W-2200

After the Xeon W 3200 series, Intel is launching the 2200 series in October 2019, which is a direct successor to the W-2100 series belonging to the Skylake generation.

This means that three Xeon workstation CPU series are now being sold at the same time :

  • Xeon W-3200: Cascade Lake server CPUs for single-processor systems with up to 28 cores and LGA3647 server socket and 6 DDR4 main memory channels
  • Xeon W-2200: Cascade Lake Server CPUs (up to high core count 18 cores) with socket LGA2066 and 4 DDR4 main memory channels
  • Xeon E-2200: Coffee Lake Refresh Core CPUs with up to 8 cores and integrated processor graphics, socket LGA1151v2 or FCBGA1440 and 2 DDR4 main memory channels

The only thing that all three series have in common is the Xeon brand name and the use of ECC main memory modules.

A product derivative of the Xeon W-2200 series is the Core-X-Cascade Lake-X series.
