With the Intel Celeron based on the Intel Core microarchitecture, Intel renewed the low-price segment in 2007 with new processors that no longer rely on increased clock rates, but on increased efficiency. These Celeron processors are used in both stationary computers ( desktops ) and mobile computers ( notebooks ), but the latter are still marketed as Intel Celeron M. With this change, the Intel Celeron D was discontinued.

Technical

In contrast to Intel's previous desktop and server processors based on the NetBurst architecture, the new Celeron relies on Intel's new, largely Pentium M -based core micro- architecture . This differs from the NetBurst architecture in addition to the significantly lower electrical power consumption, above all because of the drastically shortened pipeline . Although this reduces the possible maximum frequency, the performance increases with the same clock frequency.

As with previous Intel Celeron processors, these processors are sold with a smaller L2 cache compared to the uncut versions . The front-side bus , on the other hand, is on a par with smaller Intel Core 2 Duo processors, and technical properties such as supported features and production technology were also up-to-date on the release date. This is mainly due to the fact that Intel markets multi-core processors in more expensive price segments and so the Intel Celeron processors already have a clear differentiation from more expensive processors. In 2008 the first dual-core processors for the low-cost market followed with the Intel Celeron Dual-Core .
