Intel D4040 processor
Production: 1974 to 1981
Producer: Intel
Processor clock: 500 kHz to 740 kHz
Manufacturing : 10 µm, PMOS
Instruction set : Intel 4 bit
Base: 24-pin DIP

The 4040 is a 4- bit - microprocessor from Intel and is the successor of 4004 .

It was produced from November 1974 to 1981. The processor is compatible with its predecessor. The instruction set was expanded to 60 instructions, the program memory doubled to 8 kB and the number of 4-bit registers increased from 16 to 24. The stack for calling subroutines has been expanded to seven entries. As a further innovation, interrupts are possible.
