The SIGG Switzerland AG Bottles is a water bottle -producer and applies in the field of aluminum water bottles as a global leader. The company is headquartered in Frauenfeld , Switzerland , but has been owned by a Chinese company since 2016. The aluminum bottles are made in Switzerland, the 18/8 stainless steel and glass bottles in China, and polypropylene in Germany. The aluminum bottle is known worldwide for its shape and has been included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

history

The company was founded in 1908 by Ferdinand Sigg and Xaver Küng under the name Küng, Sigg & Cie. founded in Biel. The product range included leisure items, cookware and electrical appliances. Around 1910, the still known “hiking bottle” was designed. In 1916 the company moved to its current headquarters in Frauenfeld. Among other things, it produced the Flex-Sil pressure cooker .

In 1936 the company was taken over by the Gontenschwil AG aluminum goods factory under the direction of Heinrich Alfred Gautschi. At that time, SIGG was Alu Menziken's largest domestic customer. At that time, the “Arta-Pot” steamer was one of the most popular SIGG products and was used by Norman Dyhrenfurth on the first Himalayan expedition , among others .

During the eighties, SIGG produced aluminum bottles for gasoline transport and storage and became well known among hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts. Nowadays, SIGG no longer makes bottles for gasoline storage.

SIGG has been focusing on the drinking bottle business since 1998. In addition to the classic products in red and blue, SIGG has recently relied on products designed by well-known designers such as Keith Haring and offers an expanded collection of designs and materials.

As of November 2003, SIGG was owned by the US private equity company The Riverside Company , from which it was sold to the Chinese Haers Vacuum Containers at the end of February 2016 for 16 million Swiss francs .

Products

Aluminum bottles

The SIGG bottles are extruded from a single piece of raw aluminum . This creates a uniform bottle wall without seams. The bottles are cleaned inside and out and then sprayed with a tasteless varnish , which is then burned in.

The aluminum bottles are resistant to shocks and deformation, are light and protect the contents from light. The inner coating is flexible and does not break when deformed. Backpacker magazine called SIGG bottles the "world's toughest water bottle". SIGG bottles are also suitable for carbonated drinks. Aluminum has a high thermal conductivity and the walls of the bottles are thin, so they do not protect the contents from getting cold or warm. SIGG sells insulating bags for this, which also protect the bottles from bumps.

All SIGG bottles manufactured after 2008 have the "EcoCare" liner, which, according to SIGG, is bisphenol-A- free and phthalate- free.

Stainless steel bottles

SIGG has been producing stainless steel bottles with insulating properties since 2013. These double-walled bottles have vacuum insulation that can keep the beverage temperature for several hours. You don't need an internal coating.

Polypropylene bottles

In April 2014, SIGG started making bottles from recyclable polypropylene . These SIGG VIVA bottles are made in Switzerland and it is guaranteed that these bottles are BPA-free and made with the same ecological standards as the aluminum bottles. They are transparent and resistant to bumps and scratches.

Glass bottles

A glass bottle has been available since 2015. This double-walled bottle with WMB closure ( Wide Mouth Bottle ) is made of heat-resistant borosilicate glass . It has two removable silicone elements. A handle on the body and one on the stand (with shock-absorbing lamellas) protect the fingers and ensure that the bottle does not break when it is set down or even with light bumps. The structure of two separate glass walls ensures the isolation of the drinks, which means that cold liquids stay cool (up to two hours) and hot drinks stay warm (up to an hour). In addition, the bottle can easily be touched when the contents are hot and no condensation forms on the outside wall when the contents are cold. The liquids only come into contact with glass and stainless steel. All materials used in the bottle are BPA and BPS free.

The range was expanded to include single-walled borosilicate drinking bottles in 2017. The Star drinking bottles are covered with a soft silicone cover, which also serves as a shock protection. The lid can be opened with a simple twist.

design

SIGG is known worldwide for the designs of the bottles. Every year SIGG presents new designs for the collections, which are created by different designers.
